I forget my resolve to not talk about the new Ultraman movie

I should have a far more pleasant entry to write on the first anniversary of MEBIUS' ending, but more info on the new movie doesn't seem like very good news.

(This space was originally for what I really wanted to say.)

The only good thing I see out of this so far is at least there would be some kind of continuation or exploration of those unsettled/half-hanging romances (Asuka and Ryou, Gamu and Akko). I especially want to see something more on Asuka and Ryou because I totally ship them. And Daigo, I assume he's not married in this universe, but he would still end up with Rena, right? Also, why is Mirai the only one in uniform? It is an alternate universe, he could have some other job. (As I understand it, I think Mirai comes from yet other universe, but still...) Not to mention the original guys. I have no idea, time-wise or place-wise, where to place them at all.

If it's as AU as sandpanther seemed to imply, then, hm, yeah, I don't know. I guess at least we get to see all these Ultramen. I suppose there was no other way they were going to be able to include the Heisei stuff. Mebius the series spent a lot of time being part of canon and integrating the other Ultramen series. I guess you could say that all the hard work allows for them to go AU.

Yeah, I suppose you're right. I guess I'm just disappointed that the movie doesn't seem to be a sequel but a new, separate story. They are using familiar names (Ultramen) to market this movie.

Oh well, I guess I'll take anything at this point. It is a lot better than no movie at all.

I would've loved for it to be a sequel too. It does feel like there's potential. And I think there's some smoother ways to pull off an AU, like pretending that TDG have always been in the Showa universe. Just that Tiga's obviously not from M-78 and maybe similar cases could be made for the other 2 so that they've never been associated with the traditional grey and red Ultramen. When they change colors, I find the new ones pretty different from the old ones too. And I like HIkari, but wow, from the front, those ears really make his head a lot wider than everyone else's.

But yeah, a movie is better than none. And there's hopes that it'll be visually stunning even if the plot ends up weak. Or maybe they'll even surprise us with a good plot. I often regret not having known about Mebius before because then maybe I would've tried harder to see the movie in theaters. Must've been great fun. :) Especially when the kyoudai all combine powers into Mebius. We were cheering so enthusiastically over a 12.1" screen. Imagine if that had been a 40' screen. Lifesized Ultramen! :p

Ah, your idea sounds interesting. However, while I agree that, if the movie takes place in the Showa universe, Tiga, Dyna and Gaia don't have to come from M-78, it probably involves mass hypnotizing/merory erasing/bending of space and time in order for people (humans) in that timeline to forget there used to be 50 feet tall giants (the Showa guys) roaming around battling with monsters. But I think they are doing any or all of the above anyway, since I'm beginning to feel a lot less certain of the idea that the characters in this movie are truly someones else.

And I envy everyone who has a chance (or would have a chance if they try hard enough) to see Lifesized Ultraman in theaters. :P

Yeah, that about sums up my feelings on it. We shall see, perhaps there shall be great coolness yet.

I got the impression that everyone is in the AU minus Mirai, who comes from the Ultraman universe we know of from the TV series. So Mirai is the same, with the same job, but everyone else is altered in some way (minor or large is yet to be seen).

Yeah... From what I've read, everyone else is in the same AU, and are basically not the same people. What they describe of Daigo's back story is totally different, and I read (very briefly) somewhere that Asuka wanted to be a pro baseball player. (?? something like that...) No real information on how/if Mirai's different. It just says he's from a different continuity. He might end up being different as well. :P

I don't want alt-verse Mirai! ;-; From a writer's perspective, it seems logical to keep Mirai from the continuity we know and love, so he's our link to the familiar and therefore our friend/guide into the unknown. Of course, having said that, a different kind of Mirai would be pretty interesting.

I also prefer to see the Mirai we know rather than the unfamiliar one. And your idea of Mirai being our guide into the unknown sounds pretty cool, but I hope the unknown is not truly unknown, after all.

I hope I understand you correctly, that this information is in connection with the movie. Anyway, I think being a pro baseball player is one of Asuka's dreams in the original Dyna series as well (the other dream is being an ace pilot like his father, I believe), so that is at least something familiar. In any case, I've seen him play baseball a few times during the TV series (also he played catch ball in flashbacks with his father). Seems interesting that his dreams seem to be connected to his father somehow.

Ah, yes... Sorry, I wasn't very clear on that.

I know absolutely zilch about Dyna other than that it's in the same universe as Tiga, and he runs into Daigo at some point. Other than that, I'm lost. (Need to fix that... Sooner, rather than later.)

Oh, I was afraid that I might be annoying you with all the talk on Dyna. Anyway, I hope it is worth your time if you decide to check it out.
